Summer Home Security Tips

The summer months are nearly upon us, and that means a number of seasonal changes. Typically, the weather warms up, and people start spending a bit more time outside. This is of course fantastic and thoroughly enjoyable, but it also brings a few small concerns with it. For example, with the open and relaxed attitude and lifestyle that tend to accompany summer, home security often becomes an afterthought. People leave windows and doors open, they come and go, and often forget to lock doors or practice other basic security measures. So, while you should of course still take full advantage of the comforts and joys of the summer season, you also need to keep the safety of your family and home environment in mind. Here are a few tips to help get you thinking the right way.

To begin with, enjoy the ability to keep windows and doors open during the nice weather – but only when you’re home! If you are within your home, then not only is it less likely to be a target for crime or vandalism, but you are also there to defend it, and your loved ones. However, during the summer it is common for people to adopt carefree attitudes, and to leave windows open while out for the night, etc. It doesn’t take much to forget to close up the house when it’s so nice outside, but keep in mind that closing doors and windows is of vital importance. Most break-ins occur due to negligence, so securing your home is absolutely necessary.

It’s also important to make sure that your children, if you have any, understand the sort of practical security tips listed above. Young children are not as aware of worldly dangers, and particularly during the summer they tend to rush to fun without concern for responsibility. Of course, you need to let them have their fun to some extent, but you also need to teach your children when to lock doors and windows, how to leave the house when they run off to the neighborhood pool, etc. Again, negligence can lead to disaster, so teaching your children practical security is actually a very effective means of security.

Of course, there are more effective ways of ensuring that your home never comes to any harm. Any properly secured home is equipped with an adequate home security system, and it is this that keeps your home more or less impenetrable to outsiders. However, the practical tips discussed above are also necessary, and become particularly important during the warm, relaxing summer months.

Downtown Hoedown 2012

This past weekend we went to the annual Downtown Hoedown in Lufkin, Texas and despite living in the area forever we had never went before. I wish we had because the kids had fun and it was a lot of fun to look at everything. There was live music, a car show, vendor booths selling food and different items and activities for the kids.

Here are a few of the things we did while we were there.

First Hal go his hands on a free bag, notepad and pens from a booth ran by the Texas Department of Public Safety. That trooper just does not know how he made Hal’s day with the notepad and new pen. The kid loves to collect them and is always drawing and writing stuff down.

We visited the booth ran by the Angelina County humane Society and Hal tried to convince me to take home another kitten. As adorable as they were I hated to say we couldn’t because of our three demonic angelic cats that we already have.

Also as part of the live music there was an Elvis impersonator, that was a lot of fun.

And after we watched him the kids got their picture taken with them, this is Hal and my nieces with him and a friend of the girls. Wes did not go with us because he has went from 10 going on 16 and slept until noon.

And then right before we left the kids got to check out this big guy. He was an adorable giant turtle of some kind that was for sale for around $500.00. Hal so wished I had had that much money on me to get him or maybe her.

I guess you can’t beat a morning/afternoon seeing big turtles and an Elvis impersonator.

Since this was our first year to attend we will definitely be going back next year as well.

Kids and mowing the yard

wesley mowing

I can't really recall when I started doing things like helping mow the yard and stuff along those lines when I was a kid. And I was not really sure when I was going to either let my kids help or ask their help with doing yard work. It was mostly a question of when would I think they were old enough and truthfully I could not come up with an answer of when I would be ready to allow them. I think a … ..keep on reading....

They were not too old to hunt eggs this year

Hal hunting eggs

I posed the question on Facebook last week on what age is too old to hunt Easter eggs. Of course the consensus was pretty much when they told me they are too old. Which my 9 and 10 year old boys insisted that they were not too old yet. So of course they hunted eggs with their cousins. So we spent our Easter hunting eggs, eating candy, having a nice dinner and eating MORE candy. It was a … ..keep on reading....

Egg Decorating 2012

colored eggs

So Hal and I performed our yearly ritual of dyeing and decorating eggs for Easter. Sadly though Wes didn't want to help, I guess he thinks he is too old now. That does make me sad and just lets me that as well as nearly being as tall as I am that he is growing up. Pretty soon Hal will say he is too old too and I will be decorating and dying eggs all alone on Easter. But for now I will enjoy the … ..keep on reading....
